Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: A big film which is not really a 'big' film

A film about 3 childhood friends who go on a road trip to an exotic European country for an extended bachelor party. A film about living life to the fullest. A film on friendship and coming of age theme from a banner which has already given us cult films about friends coming of age. Sounds somewhat typical? Well the film is directed by Zoya Akhtar who last gave us Luck By Chance, a film which despite not doing well commercially is one of the finest films ever made about Hindi film industry. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara comes from a production house which has given us films which break the routine and have something fresh to offer to its audience more often than not. Zindagi also has a dream cast with this generation's three of the finest Hindi film-actors playing the leads, each having a different style of acting coming together for the first time. And the trailers have been quite impressive with stunning visuals, unseen locales and adventure sports like sky diving and deep sea diving amidst some interesting characters having lot of fun.

The peculiar thing with Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara is thats its a big film on the face of it but is still not a 'big' film. Though the film stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, has been shot extensively in Spain at a huge budget but still unlike most big budget films, at its core it seems like a simple story of 3 friends rediscovering themselves. Zoya in her first film showed finesse of an accomplished filmmaker with the subtle touches in the characterisations rather than depending on orchestrated drama or gimmicky camera-work/editing. Zindagi seems a very different film from Luck by Chance be it theme, mood or setting but judging from the promos seems to have that same depth in characterisations and restrain in storytelling.

Its hard to say how the film will be treated by the audience as on one hand it is a feel good  fun film having huge production standards with stars like Hrithik & Katrina with song and dance. However Zoya's sensibilites are subtle and treatment is expected to be realistic and restrained which is generally not the case with big budget films. Therefore it will be interesting to see how the film works and what kind and scale of audience it attracts.

Coming from the same production house, film being written and directed by the sibling of the writer-director of the erstwhile film, story being about 3 friends, comparisons are but inevitable with Dil Chahta Hai on the surface atleast. However Zoya Akhtar does not seem to be one of those filmmakers who will just make a film to harness popularity of a cult film or is lacking of ideas to just rehash a much celebrated film and ofcourse having seen Luck By Chance she seems to have her own style and perspective on human relationships. While Dil Chahta Hai was essentially about how 3 friends despite being very different individuals, their relationships with each other was so strong that it eventually overcame all their differences, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is supposed to be a film about 3 friends busy with their routine lives, redicovering themselves on a road trip and as its title indicates living your life to the fullest.

Dil Chahta Hai is a cult film by any standards and was a path-breaking/genre-reinventing film in its time. Many of us may go seeing Zindagi with DCH in mind and make comparisons which can be an unnecssary baggage on Zindagi as it seems to have its own different story, treatment and characters. The film does look sensible, fresh and feel-good. I don't think its a great idea to just have that baggage of Dil Chahta Hai and spoil our experience in times when we rarely get good films and more so because it does not even seem to outdo or be another Dil Chahta Hai, so why not just see the film for what it is and base our opinion and liking/disliking of the film on that alone. Well am just expecting to have a great time at the film hoping its worth the wait.

Oh Come On.. The film can be good but its not going to break any records. actually i suspect if its even going to recover its money. Its made on over 70 crore budget so needs atleast 100 crore collection from India. hrithik's last two films were Box Office duds, even jodha akbar was just average. Farhan and Abhay are no crowd pullers and even Katrina is not doing anything for which people will see the film for her. its a multiplex film and will not work in small cities and villages nor in overseas as its about youth. the film has no hype like Delhi Belly or Kites had. people may see it because of Dil Chahta Hai but still its not enough. i think even if it earns 40-50 crore it will be more but still the film will fail..

  5. @wheely-boy you must be SRK fan for sure.. Hrithik is much bigger than SRK. everybody is waiting desperately for ZNMD. Delhi Belly did not have any stars still it got a huge opening. this one has Hrithik, Katrina, awesome music, locations, adventure sports.. just wait and watch. 50 crore toh it'll earn only in first weekend.

  7. Doesn't matter if am SRK fan or not.. but Hrithik is definitely not as big as SRK. his last hit was 5 years back in Dhoom 2. and i am afraid if ZNMD can change that.

  10. @wheelyboy-well why the hell you dumb people care about records and how much money the film makes..for God's sake that isn't your money!! and SRK..when was his last hit?? What has he done new?? MNIK's character ripped off from RAIN MAN...guy has no imagination of his own...his name sells..it's a good thing..but unfortunately that' s the only thing srk has.."his name" no talent!! SRK can't do a role like Hrithik did in Guzaarish in 7 lifetimes and this is what SRK admitted himself!!! so GO get a LIFE..coz Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara ;)

  11. @wheely boy hrithik experiments a lot rather than ur stereotype SRK he would'nt even dare to do a film like GUZAARISH,without KJO and YASHRAJ he is nothing a big zero,he looks like shit and acts like a dumbass

  12. hrithik is the most versatile actor i hav seen in bollywood,he is talented also........srk is only good in romantic role.....nd wat hr did in guzaarish was extraordinary!!!!!

  13. Now SRK is not a good actor. Wow!!! Breaking News.. What was Swades. Chak De.. My Name is Khan.. and for the first time in my life i have heard that even a performance can be ripped. hahaha... Come on guys get a life. Hrithik was good in some films, not saying he is a bad actor. Just that SRK is something else. And ZNMD is releasing tomorrow only. Things will be clear then.

  14. wheely boy:
SRK is nothing if the big banners are removed. he can afford to do only monotonous roles.....and single hero movie.

  15. @whelly boy: Listen you are pointing finger to the actor who broke all big mouths in Bollywood with his first film KNPY. Calculation may be favorable to SRK for box office record but he is 100 times better and well qualified actor than SRK. Jodha Akber was not a average film. It earned more than 120 crore which was a super blockbuster in 2008, so your info is wrong dude. Yeah last two films or hrithik were box office failure but that doesn't sum up his future or has no relationship with future, After KNPH, hrithink had to wait for 3 years until KMG released to see his another success which was far bigger than KNPH. Ups and Down is a part of the life of an actor and is so with Hrithik. Still I can't say whether it will be blockbuster or a debacle at the BO but it should work as the reviews we got is very positive and sometimes impressive, I have not com across any -ve reviews yet. The main concern is the budget which is pretty high. If the movies is being released with as huge number of theatre as it was in case of Kites, then the movie should not have any problem for adding another blocbuster in Hrithik's career. There is a still hope exist because 100 crore business is not so tough for movies these days and when it's a Hrithik film's with excellent reviews, then I think it will surely do something at the BO.

  16. Hrithik's hits
    KNPH-father
    KMG-father
    Krrish-father
D2-sequel, every sequel is hit nowadays

as for JA, it just had distributor share of about 25 crore in India though it did well in US. but in India alone that cant be called a hit for a 50 crore budget film. also it was released at a time when no other film releases...
Anyways things will be clear with ZNMD.. watch out..

  17. Wheelyboy-go take a walk dude..Have u even seen RAIN MAN?? srk is nothing more than a copy cat..copies Amithabh, copied Dustin Hoffman to the T in MNIK...and FYI there will be many things you'll hear first time in life...one of which is- Srk is the biggest overactor after akshay kumar...his talent as an actor in front of Hrithik is Microscopic...and that's a fact you cant change!

    ReplyDelete
  18. every sequel is hit nowdays?? dhamaal 2?? stop crying you dumb***...and what if rakesh roshan gives hits with his son??? dude if u remove yash chopra and srk's gay frnd karan...srk is nothing...!! raj-rahul-rahul-raj.... i dnt care about hits and flops dude..neither does Hrithik..he's any day a better performer and a better human being!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. @wheelyboy- the problem with you srk fans is same as the one with srk himself...all u care is a HIT or FLOP..both of u live inside a safe box of urs...afraid what will happen if u ever step out of it!!! Had Hrithik cared about that...he wudn't have done Koi Mil Gaya...Lakshya..Guzaarish...Jodha Akbar...dude look at the variety of roles !!! srk has had a way longer carrier but all same kind of roles..too scared to try huh!!! phattu!!

  20. Double Dhamaal isn't a flop. Check any credible trade website. and a film is a hit when people like it and flop when they dont. as simple as that. by calling SRK an overactor, you are showing your intelligence..
