Box Office: Singham and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara continue to dominate in absence of major releases

Singham is doing extremely well at the Box Office as it collected nearly 24 crore nett in its 2nd week which is just a 50% drop from its first week collections. Normally the films which get a huge opening show drops of around 60% in second week but Singham has worked big time and has emerged as the biggest solo hit for Ajay Devgn by far. Its two week total is about 73 crore nett and the third week also seems very promising. Singham has shown the best collections in single screens/smaller cities. Also having a generous dose of Marathi dialogues the film has worked wonders in Maharashtra.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is also doing extremely well collecting nearly 13 crore nett in its 3rd week which is just a drop of 35% from its second week. The 3 week total now stands at around 77 crore nett. This despite the fact that the film failed to make the mark in single screens/smaller cities showing that today even an urban centric film can do great business and need not work everywhere. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is now one of the biggest multiplex hits ever only behind 3 Idiots and Dabangg and has good chances of beating Dabangg till the end of its run. Though ZNMD had a great starcast(Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif) and did have good anticipation among the youth but the way its performing at the Box Office has surprised everyone.

Meanwhile all the small films released last weekend failed to make any mark on the Box Office. Gandhi to Hitler and Khap were outright rejected while Bubble Gum despite getting good response from those who watched it failed because of lack of awareness. Both ZNMD and Singham got an advantage of no major releases for two weeks which is rare these days. The next major release is the multistarrer Aarakshan releasing on 12th August directed by Prakash Jha whose last film Raajneeti was a huge blockbuster. With a star-cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone & Prateik and heavy promotions the film is expected to open really huge aided by an extended Independence day weekend.

Box Office: Singham roars at the Box Office. ZNMD still rocking.

Singham which released this weekend had a fabulous opening collecting over 30 crore nett over its first weekend at the Indian Box Office. While the Friday collections were really good the business continued to grow over the weekend, Sunday being really huge. Singham is doing fantastic business at the single screens more so in smaller cities and towns. The multiplexes of the big cities have not responded as well but the collections there have also improved over the weekend. However the business from single screens has been so strong that it now has the second biggest opening weekend of the year after Salman Khan starrer Ready.

Meanwhile Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara sustains brilliantly in the second weekend collecting over 11.5 crore nett which is amazing for a film in its second weekend while another big film has opened so huge. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara had a massive first weekend of nearly 27 crore nett and continued to do really well even in the weekdays collecting over 17 crore nett on weekdays which is just amazing. Its total till the end of second weekend is nearly 56 crore nett and going by the way its been trending, its expected to continue to do as well in forthcoming days. This despite the fact that ZNMD hardly found any takers in single screens. However the second weekend collections from the major multiplexes in big cities have been even better than Singham in its first weekend.

Audience Report:
The promos of Singham clearly indicated that its a hardcore masala action film on the lines of Dabangg and Wanted with full on dialoguebaaji and maar-dhaad. According to the initial reports the film has very well delivered what it promised to its target audience. The over the top action as well as dialogues meant to elicit whistles and claps seems to have worked really well for the film as the film has opened really well in single screens in smaller cities and towns. However Singham unlike Dabangg does not seem to have evoked the same response from the urban audience as the opening in big cities multiplexes has been on the lower side which was anyways expected from it.

Synopsis:
When it comes to being punctual and doing his duties perfectly, Lovely Singh is unmatchable. Taking great pride in what he does, he spares no effort in giving his everything to his profession.

Summoned for an assignment of guarding Divya, the daughter of Sartaj Rana, a business tycoon Lovely Singh accompanies her to her campus, but ends up rubbing her the wrong way with his over-protective nature and paranoia about security. She finds him to be a major obstacle in leading a regular campus life. To throw him off-track and get him out of the way, she comes up with a ‘master-plan’- that of trapping him in a fake love affair. ‘Once he’s smitten by the girl of his dreams and is reveling in his new-found romance, he will leave us alone, and we shall be free to do our own thing unhindered’, says Divya to her friends.

She becomes an anonymous admirer of his and starts hounding him, expressing her ‘feelings’ in no uncertain terms. Lovely Singh however proves to be a tough nut to crack, and it takes quite a bit of doing from her side to penetrate his fort-like exterior. But once she succeeds in doing so, he transforms into a completely different person. Divya is triumphant and is all set to relish her regained freedom.

But things take an unexpected turn when she learns a few things about Lovely Singh. Things that she could’ve never even imagined! And she soon finds herself trapped in a dilemma that she’s unable to resolve! And with her, soon enough, Lovely Singh finds himself ensnared in a web of lies, trickery and deceit!

Box Office: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has a fabulous weekend

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara did fabulous business of over 28 crore nett in India over the weekend. The collections from the big cities/multiplexes were brilliant while the business remained on the lower side in smaller cities and single screens which was always expected. The film got quite a good opening but the best part is that the collections kept improving through the weekend indicating that the film has been accepted by its target audience in a big way. The weekdays also started on a good note with reports coming of a really good Monday business as well. Next week sees the release of Ajay Devgan starrer Singham which seems to aim a completely different audience so ZNMD has an opportunity of doing great business for 4 weeks till the release of multi-starrer Aarakshan.

Meanwhile Murder 2 had a brilliant first week collections of around 35 crores. In its second weekend it did have a significant fall recording over 5.5 crore nett but the film being made on relatively low budget has done extremely well thus emerging as a huge Hit. The success of Murder 2 has further consolidated that sequels/franchisee of successful films do get a favorable response at the Box Office atleast for the first few days. No wonder Murder 3 is already in pipeline.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Review: A trip you'd most likely not forget anytime soon..

There are films which while you see, you really have a great time but soon forget them when you get back to your routine lives or even as as soon as after exiting the cinema hall. But once in a while comes a film which appeals to your senses deeply and you just can't get it out of your head even long after you have seen it, they make you want to go back to that world again, relive that experience, be again with those characters. I felt the same for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Luck By Chance, Zoya Akhtar's debut was a film which made me feel ecstasic about the existence of cinematic medium. There was nothing path-breaking about the film on the face of it yet her understanding and portrayal of raw human emotions and the maturity she showed as a filmmaker was remarkable.

No doubt when I first heard about the announcement of a road movie directed by her having Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay playing the leads I was over the moon. However the first look poster with a bare-chested Hrithik was a serious downer to my expectations from Zoya. I quite liked the promos but with a couple of lip sync songs and inclusion of Hrithik-Katrina romantic track made me feel that maybe this film is meant to appeal to a wider audience but still had faith in Zoya that being a sensible filmmaker, she will still do a good job with whatever she does. But buoy! Did she surprise!! Zindagi despite being very different in setting and tone from her debut film has the same finesse in terms of sensibilities. A lot of comparisons has been made with Dil Chahta Hai from the promos but having seen the film I can say that the only similarities are on the surface, Zoya has her completely original style and treatment. If anything at all Hrithik's character reminded me a bit of Farhan's character in Excel's another production Rock On but still it was played very differently so didn't really matter.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara works on various levels. The portrayal of relationship between the three friends is shown in a very different way and undergoes a graph through the course of the film. These are not college going students but three guys busy with their work lives in early 30s. They all are together after some four years so initially there is a bit of discomfort before they get into their own and go back to their younger days. The humour is not about jokes but the way when close friends are together even the lamest jokes are funny. And more than the dialogues its the silences, the body language and subtle expressions/eye gestures between them that amazingly portrays the relationship between them.

The film's main theme is letting go of the strings which we have bound ourselves with be it with our relationships, sense of security, or expectations. All the three friends have their own issues which are due to their own fears more than external reasons much like most issues everyone faces. The daring adventure sports each one undergoes overcoming their fears is a metaphor for the fears they face in their lives and how facing and overcoming those fears liberates them from the baggages they had. The adventure sports be it sky diving or deep sea diving are showed in a very uncharacteristic manner. More than the sense of adventure its the sense of liberation and feeling alive that has been portrayed through the way these scenes have been shot, performed and edited. Without a doubt these are amongst the most brilliant sequences I have seen in recent times. Farhan's scene with his father is also truly a brilliantly sequence one which was so heartbreakingly real that it was unnerving but truly liberating at the same time.

Though I just loved the film but had certain issues too. I felt with the presence of the Senorita song, the Tomatina festival song and the whole sequence though well shot was not really needed. Apart from it there were quite a few scenes which I felt could have been done without. Its not the pace I am talking of, infact the best thing about Zoya's direction is how she lets the scene play on without any hurry in a very self-assured way that brings out the magic. The small lip sync portion in the otherwise excuisitely shot Khwabon ke Parindey song was also jarring. Also felt that Hrithik's and Abhay's issues could have been more substantiated. However the real triumph of Zindagi is not in the story but how its told, the absolutely magical moments that just refuse to leave you and makes you want to revisit them all over again.

The best thing about the trio of Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay is that they are three completely different persons with very different acting styles and their characters are very close to their real selves which brings about a very interesting and unusual chemistry between them. It would not be wise to compare their performances because each of them compliments the others and also stand out as individuals. The preference if any can be for the characters not for the performances. Its amazing how someone like Hrithik who is known to steal the scenes from his co-stars plays a role where he is just one of the three friends without any larger than life attributes. Infact initially his character is somewhat snobbish and calculated but after the transformation he is just something else, truly letting go of his insecurities. His magic moment in the film was for sure the one just after deep sea diving, makes you realize what a truly gifted actor Hrithik is.

Farhan's character is complete opposite to that of Hrithik's therefore the issues between them. He plays the happy go lucky guy who doesn't care much about things and just likes to have a good time. Though the deeper layers of his character are revealed as the film progresses and he pitches a truly fine performance one which had the biggest risk of coming out as fake and labored. Abhay's character is the most balanced and he is so comfortable with it that you are amazed with the ease he carries off himself, this guy never disappoints or fails to surprise. I was really concerned with Katrina's inclusion in the cast but she came off so well that I was not surprised Hrithik's character fell in love with her. Kalki's character could have so easily been cliched but she manages to make it believable while serving its purpose which in itself is commendable.

Special mention should be made for the Director of Photography Carlos Catalan because ZNMD is one film where visuals play an absolutely pivotal role in the whole experience of the film. The way the sky diving, deep-sea diving sequences and the entire time they are on road is shot has to be seen to be believed. Its not just about the beautiful frames but the freshness and the feel they lend to the movie. Editing by Anand Subaya and Sound design by Baylon Fonseca is also of the highest order. All production aspects of the film are in perfect sync to realize the vision of the filmmaker in the best possible way. Javed Akhtar's brilliant poetry recited by Farhan Akhtar at pivotal points is a brilliant masterstroke that elevates the whole experience.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara despite some rough edges is a film which may deeply affect you with its heartfelt and uncompromising storytelling. Go watch, its worth going to the cinemas if you don't want to regret later that you missed it on big screen when you catch it on TV and chances are you'd want to watch it more than just once.

Audience Report:
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has been a keenly anticipated by the audience because of its dream starcast (comprising Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar & Katrina Kaif), a banner which has rarely disappointed, amazing promotion and the fresh feel good look of the film. Initial reports suggest that the film has been really liked by the audience and lives upto the expectations. Audience Feedback also suggests that its not a typical entertainer which one sees and forget instead it remains with you even after you have seen it. They have loved the film for some really amazing moments, performances, stunning visuals, adventure sports and the overall feel-good factor. Most people who have seen it feel that its worth a watch and will not mind seeing it again. However since its not a typical mainstream entertainer so there have been people who did not find it engaging enough. The film may not appeal that much to the interiors audience but is likely to work in a big way in metros and big cities.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: A big film which is not really a 'big' film

A film about 3 childhood friends who go on a road trip to an exotic European country for an extended bachelor party. A film about living life to the fullest. A film on friendship and coming of age theme from a banner which has already given us cult films about friends coming of age. Sounds somewhat typical? Well the film is directed by Zoya Akhtar who last gave us Luck By Chance, a film which despite not doing well commercially is one of the finest films ever made about Hindi film industry. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara comes from a production house which has given us films which break the routine and have something fresh to offer to its audience more often than not. Zindagi also has a dream cast with this generation's three of the finest Hindi film-actors playing the leads, each having a different style of acting coming together for the first time. And the trailers have been quite impressive with stunning visuals, unseen locales and adventure sports like sky diving and deep sea diving amidst some interesting characters having lot of fun.

The peculiar thing with Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara is thats its a big film on the face of it but is still not a 'big' film. Though the film stars Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif, has been shot extensively in Spain at a huge budget but still unlike most big budget films, at its core it seems like a simple story of 3 friends rediscovering themselves. Zoya in her first film showed finesse of an accomplished filmmaker with the subtle touches in the characterisations rather than depending on orchestrated drama or gimmicky camera-work/editing. Zindagi seems a very different film from Luck by Chance be it theme, mood or setting but judging from the promos seems to have that same depth in characterisations and restrain in storytelling.

Its hard to say how the film will be treated by the audience as on one hand it is a feel good fun film having huge production standards with stars like Hrithik & Katrina with song and dance. However Zoya's sensibilites are subtle and treatment is expected to be realistic and restrained which is generally not the case with big budget films. Therefore it will be interesting to see how the film works and what kind and scale of audience it attracts.

Coming from the same production house, film being written and directed by the sibling of the writer-director of the erstwhile film, story being about 3 friends, comparisons are but inevitable with Dil Chahta Hai on the surface atleast. However Zoya Akhtar does not seem to be one of those filmmakers who will just make a film to harness popularity of a cult film or is lacking of ideas to just rehash a much celebrated film and ofcourse having seen Luck By Chance she seems to have her own style and perspective on human relationships. While Dil Chahta Hai was essentially about how 3 friends despite being very different individuals, their relationships with each other was so strong that it eventually overcame all their differences, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is supposed to be a film about 3 friends busy with their routine lives, redicovering themselves on a road trip and as its title indicates living your life to the fullest.

Dil Chahta Hai is a cult film by any standards and was a path-breaking/genre-reinventing film in its time. Many of us may go seeing Zindagi with DCH in mind and make comparisons which can be an unnecssary baggage on Zindagi as it seems to have its own different story, treatment and characters. The film does look sensible, fresh and feel-good. I don't think its a great idea to just have that baggage of Dil Chahta Hai and spoil our experience in times when we rarely get good films and more so because it does not even seem to outdo or be another Dil Chahta Hai, so why not just see the film for what it is and base our opinion and liking/disliking of the film on that alone. Well am just expecting to have a great time at the film hoping its worth the wait.

Audience Report:
Chillar Party did not have a good opening but has shown growth in the business over the days indicating that the film has been appreciated by the audience. Most people who have seen it have liked it specially for the kids' performances and its simplicity. However the film lacks appeal for the audience who look for typical paisa-vasool entertainment which is also clear from the promos. The film seems to be doing rather well with family audience and seems to be a good option specially since the other two big films which are doing well at the Box Office are both for adults.

Box Office: Murder 2 has an excellent opening, Delhi Belly going strong

Murder 2 had a great opening at the Box Office with the first weekend collections of over 22 crore nett in India. The film has done tremendously well specially in single screens while multiplexes have also given good returns despite limited shows. Infact in terms of occupancy it has the second biggest opening of the year only after Salman Khan starrer Ready. Murder 2 had hit music but the buzz was missing so the opening did come as a bit of a surprise. Surely it has lot to do with it being a sequel to Murder which was a huge success so even though not much was publicised about the plot and story of the film people knew what to expect from it and it seems to have delivered on that.

UTV and Salman Khan produced Chillar Party did not have a good start at the Box Office but has shown constant growth in Box Office collections collecting nearly 3 crore nett over the weekend. The fact that both Delhi Belly and Murder 2 are adult films seems to have favored Chillar Party which is attracting family audience through good word of mouth.

Meanwhile Delhi Belly had a really good second weekend collecting over 10 crore nett at the Box Office after a brilliant first week of nearly 38 crore nett. Delhi Belly is expected to continue to do well even in weekdays like its first week but it will be interesting to see how it fares after the release of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which targets almost the same audience. Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap collected nearly 2 crore in its second weekend. The Box Office collections have been less than impressive for the film but since its not a big budget film and has already got really good revenues by selling Satellite and other rights, it has earned profits for its investors.

Murder 2: Reviews & Audience Report

Audience Report:
Murder 2 has got a really good opening, specially at the single screens and smaller cities. Also the reports suggest that the film is being liked by its target audience who also liked Murder. Interestingly Murder 2 is a different story and setting altogether from Murder but falls in the same genre of sexual thriller and works in that context. However the film does not seem to work in the same way with the high-end multiplex audience who are exposed to best of such stuff from Hollywood.

Box Office: Delhi Belly has a great first weekend, affected Bbuddah's business

Aamir Khan's Delhi Belly had a really good first weekend collecting over 26 crore nett from the Box Office and has found great appreciation among the target audience. Delhi Belly has been released on a very large number of screens across India for a film of this nature. The collections from the multiplexes in metro and bigger cities have been fabulous while the smaller cities/single screens were not good. The collections have improved day by day over the weekend that shows that the film is being liked by the audience. The weekdays business is expected to be really strong as well hopefully taking the first week nett collections over 40 crores.

Meanwhile Amitabh Bachchan starrer Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap suffered majorly due to Delhi Belly wave but still as the film has found appreciation, it showed improvement in collections over the weekend. Its nett collections over the weekend were over 7 crore which may not be good but as the film has been made on a relatively lesser budget so it can still emerge as an average success if it is able to sustain at the Box Office in the upcoming days.

Double Dhamaal in its second weekend showed an expected fall in collections but still managed to collect over 4.5 crore nett which is decent because of the release of 3 big films this week. Next weekend sees the release of Murder 2 which is a sequel of the highly successful Murder. The film's music has been liked however the buzz is missing. Its to be seen whether it continues the trend of sequels emerging huge successes or not.

Audience Report:

Though Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap's opening was not good but the film has been generally liked by the audience. The film being a tribute to Amitabh Bachchan's persona of the past has specially appealed to his fans. Overall the feedback is that its a good time pass entertainer worth spending money on. The film's Box Office performance has been affected quite a bit by Delhi Belly but Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap has an advantage that its a family film unlike Delhi Belly which is meant only for adults. The trends indicate that the film should be able to sustain because despite not having a huge audience, it is being accepted by most people who have seen it.

Promotions & Buzz:
Delhi Belly has got a great buzz around it like any Aamir Khan film due to a praiseworthy promotional strategy which has worked really well for the film. Delhi Belly has been promoted in a very unconventional manner with the help of a number of music videos which will not be part of the film. Promotions started with the song Bhaag D.K. Bose which became an instant hit and has brought a lot of curiosity for the film. Delhi Belly being an adult comedy, a strong emphasis has been put to warn the viewers to exercise discretion so as they should have right expectations from the film. Though the film is only meant for open-minded adult audience, it is expected to open really well at the Box Office due to great curiosity amongst the target audience.

Audience Report:
Delhi Belly which was has always been marketed as an adult comedy has worked with the majority of the intended audience in a big way. The film got a great response from the audience as the opening has been brillliant. Most people feel that Delhi Belly is the most fun they have had in a while and would not mind seeing it again. However some of the audience felt that it had overt use of the cuss words, something which was always expected of it. Overall it seems that the film will have a good repeat audience and should carry on doing well in upcoming days.

Box Office: Double Dhamaal has second best opening weekend of the year

Double Dhamaal has an opening weekend of over 25 crore nett at the Indian Box Office which is the second best of the year after Ready. The film had got a really good first day but due to the mixed reports it seemed that it will show significant fall over the weekend however that was not the case as it was the only release this weekend with no Hollywood release as well while the films released in last week had already tanked at the Box Office. It is yet to be seen if it is able to hold up in the weekdays but the film has already done well enough for itself to be called a success. Despite being the solo release and a comedy, the success of Double Dhamaal has come as a surprise since it had no major face value and even the promos did not seem good.

These shows that the sequels and franchisees of successful films do have a big edge at the Box Office over other films due to the familiarity factor. Most of the sequels released since 2006 have done extremely well at the Box Office, Golmaal being the most successful franchisee and in case of Dhamaal 2 it was for the first time that as many as all 5 leads of the first film were repeated in the sequel playing the same characters.

All the releases of the last week showed a drastic fall this weekend while most of them hardly got any screens this week. While Ready which is in its 4th week now collected nearly 2 crore nett in the weekend which is good considering the majority of its screens were replaced by Double Dhamaal which is also a comedy.

Next weekend sees the release of the much awaited Aamir Khan Productions' Delhi Belly and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap. Delhi Belly is expected to open huge, the only limiting factor for it being that its an Adult rated film. Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap is also expected to do well as it has got a good buzz and is a relatively low budget film. The weekend will also see the release of Hollywood biggie Transformers 3 which will surely attract the Hollywood enthusiasts.

Synopsis:

Ra.One a sci-fi superhero film which will have Shahrukh Khan playing the role of a superhero called G.One while the villain on whose name the film is named after is being played by Arjun Rampal. Ra.One apparently the most expensive Hindi film ever is also Shahrukh Khan's most ambitious film yet which he says aims to push the boundaries of the Special Effects in India which can be compared to the best in the world. The Special Effects in the film are also by Shahrukh Khan's own Visual Effects company called Red Chillies VFX along with the technicians from Hollywood. The ambitiousness of the film is clear from the fact that the film's promotion kick-started in March when the film's teaser trailer was unveiled during the Cricket World Cup which was later followed by a longer trailer which was launched in May end. The film also features a song by the famous international rap singer Akon. It is set to release on Diwali this year with the highest number of screens ever for a Hindi film.

Laila(Katrina Kaif): A bohemian fashion student from London. She takes time off to teach diving every year. This year in Spain. She meets up with three young men from India.
Natasha(Kalki Koechlin): A filthly rich daughter of a hotelier. She is an interior designer and in love with Kabir. She is slightly nervous about this bachelor trip.

Synopsis:
3 young men take a holiday that changes their lives forever.
Kabir (Abhay Deol) has just met Natasha. 6 months later they are engaged.
He wants to go on an extended bachelor party. A 3 week road trip with Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) and Arjun (Hrithik Roshan)- his 2 best friends since school. The only problem is Arjun is too tied up with work. After much emotional blackmail and cajoling the boys set off on a journey they were meant to take 4 years ago.
A fantasy holiday they had planned to take after college but never happened. A road trip where each one gets to do the ultimate sport of his choice and the other 2 just have to do it with him. Whether they want to or not!

Promotions and Buzz:
The promotions for Double Dhamaal have been really high on quantity but the same cannot be same about the quality. Dhamaal was a success at Box Office and was liked by the audience as well. Though the humour was slapstick even in Dhamaal, it never seemed to try too hard. However from the promos of Double Dhamaal it seems that the sequel is just to cash in the popularity of the original as the humour seems forced and crass. However being the sequel of a popular film and a comedy along with heavy promotions, it seems that the film will get a decent opening. It may turn out to be a success(more in smaller cities/towns than metros) but it seems difficult that it will be as liked by the audience as Dhamaal.

Audience Report:
Double Dhamaal got a really good opening with better numbers than were predicted by most trade analysts. The audience reaction has however not been that good. Some have found it to be a decent comedy, some feel that its a time pass type but not nowhere as funny as Dhamaal. While there are a lot of people who just hated it and found it a waste of money, there have been reports of people walking out of the theatre within the first 30 minutes. However being a solo release this weekend it may put up decent numbers this week for the lack of choice among the audience but since the next Friday will see the release of much awaited Aamir Khan produced Delhi Belly and Amitabh Bachchan starrer Bbuddah hoga tera baap, it doesn't seem Double Dhamaal has any chance after the first week.

Synopsis:
The four good-for-nothing jokers from Dhamaal - Roy(Riteish Deshmukh), Manav(Jaaved Jaafery), Adi(Arshad Warsi) and Boman(Ashish Chowdhry) are back again! Salman Khan's Ready earns 69 crore nett at Box Office in its first week

After a huge opening weekend and steady collections through the rest of the week, Ready has collected around 69 crore nett in India. The collection from everywhere whether it is metroes, cities or small towns have been great but its doing its best business in B & C centres. Business from both multiplexes and single screens has been excellent. After a weekend collections of around 42 crore nett it collected nearly 27 crores in weekdays which shows that the film has been accepted by the majority of the audience.

Ready's success can be attributed to a number of factors. For a long time no big budget film purely meant entertainment has released due to World Cup and IPL. In the meantime Akshay Kumar starrer Thank You which was also directed by Ready's director Anees Bazmee also released but did not find acceptance at the Box Office besides the sinking popularity of Akshay Kumar. Salman Khan's last Blockbuster Dabangg proved that he indeed has a large fanbase who just love to see him doing his own thing and don't expect him to do roles where he is required to play complex and layered characters. Also the film was promoted in a big way and the songs 'Character Dheela' & 'Dhinka Chika' as well as their videos became very popular which helped the film in a big way.

Ready's opening is the 3rd biggest after Dabangg and 3 Idiots both of which were released in festive periods while Ready is by far the biggest opener in a non-festive period. With the way its performing at the Box Office it is expected to easily collect over 120 crore nett in India. Second weekend has already started on a positive note with no major competition so its expected to post big numbers even in second week.

Peepli Live: That rare daringly honest yet immensely engaging film

Going to see a film like Peepli Live one needs to go with an open mind because it doesn't necessarilly fall into any of the categories that we compulsively like to put every film into. One may see it as a satire, a social commentary, a realistic film, an issue based film or just as an entertainer. Peepli Live at a certain level is all of them but not particularly any of them. Is Peepli Live a perfect film? No, if at all there is such a thing as a perfect film. Is it pathbreaking. Its not, was never meant to be. Yet it leaves you in awe if you see it from the right perspective. Peepli Live is a daringly honest film and that is its biggest strength.

Anusha Rizvi, the writer-director of the film knows exactly why she was making this film and never gets carried away by commercial temptations, cynicism or pseudo-artistry. The central character of the movie is no hero nor a greatly dignfied human being. Neither the media is evil in the absolute sense. They are all what they are because of their circumstances and the fact that they are all humans, flawed yet not all that bad. On another level a great achievement of Peepli Live is that it proves that to depict an honest story you need not take the audience for granted while expecting them to pay for bearing an unengaging film.

There are lots of funny scenes, some critics may even question the requirement of certain humurous situtations while depicting the whole scenario. The fact that these scenes never feel out of place or forced is because all of them are within the context of the whole scenario and are humourous without any exaggeration or manipulation. Humour in the film comes from characters and their natural situations. Despite that there are instances in the film which may seem a bit over the top but anyone who has a genuine understanding of how the politics, media and bureacracy works in India they'd know even far grosser situations are possible in reality. Indeed reality can be stranger than fiction. Just that most filmmakers in desperation to make it stranger use more convenient methods while Peepli Live is deeply researched, felt and filmed.

Aamir Khan has said that he was considered for playing Natha but after they found Omkardas Manikpuri, there was no way he could even think of playing Natha. After you see the film you realise why. The power of the performances in this film is that you never see them as performances or someone deliberately acting, you just see the characters in certain circumstances. One actually feels that we have known these characters, more so if one has been to such places. Peepli Live may seem like a simple straightforward film at the surface but if we dig deeper it has many subtle layers like the central character Natha who hardly has any dialogues but still conveys the most or the local print journalist Rakesh who after a certain point in time realises the vagueness of the whole 'tamasha'.

It is heartening to see that a film like Peepli Live having the best possible and uncompromised production standards. Despite the obvious commercial risks with such a film there are no product placements and to retain the genuine hinterland lingo it was not toned down for attaining a more commerce friendly 'U' Rating. Technically be it editing, cinematography, sound design, set design, costumes or make-up all are top-notch in their own ways without being distracting which is an achievement in itself. Kudos to the whole production team.

Peepli Live neither takes sides nor offers any solutions. It is an honest reflection of a society, without any agenda or cynicism but a much needed deep understanding. Different viewers are expected to receive it differently because nothing is forced onto the viewers. With all the buzz and hype surrounding the film, a viewer may go in with certain expectations but at the heart of it, Peepli Live is a rare honest film that succeeds greatly in its portrayal of an India which we already know along with an India which we otherwise choose not to know.

Verdict: While it certainly doesn't qualify as a universal entertainer neither it is meant to be but there are very rare chances that you'd regret spending the price of a cinema ticket on it. Absolutely recommended!!!

Aamir Khan's Dhobi Ghat selected for Toronto Film Fest

While Aamir Khan is presently busy with the international promotions of his upcoming production Peepli Live, the next film under Aamir Khan Productions' Dhobi Ghat has been selected for highly prestigious Toronto International film Festival(TIFF). This has been confirmed by the co-director of the festival, Cameron Bailey. The other film selected from India for the festival is Anurag Kashyap's That girl in yellow boots.

Toronto film fest will commence on 9th September and run uptil 19th September. The dates for screenings of Dhobi Ghat are yet to be announced. Cameron Bailey described Dhobi Ghat as 'salty lime soda over crushed ice' through his twitter account. Interestingly Aamir Khan Productions' Peepli Live set to release on 13th August was also showcased in various international film festivals from where it received tremendous appreciation. It seems Aamir Khan plans to follow the same route for Dhobi Ghat. He has earlier said that he wants to market all his 3 upcoming productions(Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghat and Delhi Belly) in mainstream international markets.

Dhobi Ghat has been directed by debutante Kiran Rao who is also Aamir's wife and has assisted Ashutosh Gowariker in Lagaan and Swades. The release date for the film has not been declared but it is expected to release by the end of this year. The film has four lead characters which includes Aamir Khan who is playing a painter.

I hate luv storys Review: Watch it only if you do not hate 'luv storys'

I hate luv Storys is a conventional Rom-Com with an adorable lead pair, chartbuster music, some smart dialogues, high production values and ofcourse a 'luv' story. While it spoofs the typical romantic hindi films more so the SRK-Yashraj-K.Jo ones, it somewhat intentionally ends up being one itself. It is quite enjoyable till it starts taking itself too seriously and keeps stretching beyond a point.

The basic premise of the film is that Jai who prefers being called J believes that love is nothing but just a stupid concept courtesy hindi films. Simran on the other hand lives in the world of filmi love storys and even has a fiancee whose name is Raj who gifts her a White flower everyday. Jai works as an Assistant Director for a filmmaker Veer Kapoor who makes the kind of romantic films Raj just can't stand but Simran really loves. Simran gets assignment to work as an Art Director for Veer Kapoor's new film 'Pyaar Pyaar Pyaar' which is a mishmash of all Adi-Chopra and Karan Johar films and yet is not supposed to be just a love story, but a saga.

Punit Malhotra, director of this film has worked as an AD for Karan Johar and Veer Kapoor's character containing some refrences to Karan Johar makes it easy to guess from where the idea of the film came from. The film maintains a good pace till the interval but afterwards it seemed as if the writer has run out of ideas and starts following the cliches more than needed.

The films works mostly because of its lead pair Sonam-Imran. Imran plays Jai really well and finally again seems comfortable after Jaane Tu. While he may not have so far shown versatility as an actor but when given a role which suits his real personality he does it with so much ease and comfort. Sonam Kapoor has a girlish charm which is familiar yet refreshing. The girl was born to be in front of the camera. Imran and Sonam share an easy chemistry with the help of some well written dialogoues while the story and screenplay hardly has anything refreshing to offer.

The supporting cast is pretty good with a notable performance by Kavin Dave who plays Jai's friend. Music like in all such luv stories is an important element and is certainly a strength of the film, 'bin tere' being the song which does not leave you even if the film does after you have left the cinema halls.

I hate luv Storys may not be a must watch but is certainly a decent weekend entertainer but only for those who do not hate 'luv' storys.

PS: After seeing his dance in the title track, its finally confirmed that Immu really cant dance, Saala.

Successful films usually fall under these two categories: The films which have a great starcast, strong marketing skills and makers with a successful track record. Those films get a great or even record breaking openings but because of hype so many people see the movie in the first week itself that in latter weeks the Box Office Collections falls steeply. Then there are films which may not have great starcast and are not marketed aggressively but have very good content. Such films generally do not get a great opening but due to Word of Mouth publicity the film does great business in latter weeks. Both these kinds of films may be highly successful but imagine what if a film has everything going for it: The biggest superstar-actor, a filmmaker with an enviable track record, unparalleled marketing tactics and above all a very well crafted film which entertains as it educates. 3 Idiots happens and it surpasses everyone's expectations. 3 Idiots not only had an unimaginably earth-shattering opening but continued its dream run in latter weeks with average drops of just about 40%(compared to >60% average drops of other big ticket films).

3 Idiots success is not just huge by Indian standards but has also managed to take notice of the biggest international publications like New York Times and UK's Guardian. 3 Idiots is set to earn more than $80 million dollars from Box Office alone which was just unimaginable a couple of years ago for an Indian film. The film's success will not only affect it makers and other people directly associated with it but also the whole Hindicine industry as world will now not think of it as just the one which produces maximum films but also the one which can generate great revenues through quality content. Dev D has a good weekend with 5.5 crore nett

Anurag Kashyap's Dev D starring Abhay Deol has done a decent business of nearly 5.5 crore over the weekend. The film has got rave reviews and has been largely accepted by the target audience. Due to problem with the multiplexes the film started slow but picked up with good word of mouth. Dev D surely seems to be a profit making venture for UTV.

Meanwhile Luck By chance despite getting huge critical acclaim and appreciation is finding hard to recover money as the film was bought by Big Pictures for a good amount. In its first week Luck By Chance has grossed a nett of nearly 10.5 crores. Harman Baweja starrer Victory has proved to be disastrous for its distributors with a business of about 1.7 crore nett.

Raaz - The Mystery Continues grossed about 4.25 crore nett in its second week taking its total to nearly 24.5 crores. While Ghajini in its 6th week did a nett business of nearly 1 crore to take its total to about 114 crore.

SRK's Billu Barber is now only Billu

The title of SRK's latest production directed by Priyadarshan 'Billu Barber' has been cahnged to 'Billu' as it was found derogatory by the Salon and Beauty Parlour Association. According to the chairman of the association the term 'Barber' denotes not just an occupation but is also a caste. So after a meeting between the two parties at Mannat Shahrukh agreed to remove 'Barber' from the title. The change will be made to posters wherever possible. SRK has said that as his film's aim is not to hurt anyone he will do anything possible to not offend anybody through his film and after they will watch the film they will realise that there is nothing derogatory against them. 'Billu' will release on 13th February worldwide.

Kites purchased by Big Pictures at a record price

Filmkraft Production's Kites starring Hrithik Roshan, Barbara Mori and Kangana Ranaut has been purchased by Big pictures at a record price. Actual price is not known but according to speculations it is about Rs. 150 crores though according to reports exact amount will be finalised closer to the film's release. The film is scheduled to be released on Diwali(16th October) to encash the festival mood. Rakesh Roshan has confirmed the deal officially. Thus the deal has broken all the past revenue records set by Ghajini, Om Shanti Om , Singh is Kinng and Rab ne bana Di Jodi. The deal will include the worldwide distribution and marketing rights including music, satellite, home video rights. Kites apart from aiming at the Iaudience is also aimed at the global audience with international standards.

Jodhaa Akbar, Rock On!! and A Wednesday rule at Star Screen Awards

Winners of 15th Annual Star Screen Awards were declared last night. Jodhaa Akbar won the major awards like Best Film, Best Director for Ashutosh Govariker shared with Neeraj Pandey for A Wednesday, Best Actor for Hrithik Roshan and Best Music for A.R. Rahman. Other films which won multiple awards were Rock On!! and A Wednesday. Priyanka Chopra won the Best Actor(Female) Award for Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion.

Ghajini continues with roaring business

Ghajini did record breaking business in week 2 collecting 26.5 crores nett from India alone. The film's nett total in India is nearly 91 crores and is expected to cross 100 crores by 3rd week. Doing so it will be the first hindi film to attempt this feet. The film has already surpassed all the earlier films in terms of nett total by a huge margin.
Rab ne Bana di Jodi continued with its good run and collected around 4 crore nett in its 4th weekto take its nett total to 80 crores. The film is already a blockbuster.
New releases Bad Luck Govind and Kaashh... mere Hote opened to extremely poor response and has no chances at the box office.
Next week Akshay Kumar starrer Chandni Chowk to China is expected to do fire works at the box office so watch out.

First Look:Ashutosh Govariker's What's your Rashee?

Ashutosh Govariker's latest film What's your Rashee's First Look was recently released. What's your Rashee is a romantic comedy based on a Gujarati novel Kimball Rasenwood written by Madhu Rye and stars the Love Story 2050 pair Harman Baweja and Priyanka Chopra. The film is in its second schedule being shot at around 65 locations in Mumbai. The film will also be shot in Chicago and Baroda. It is expected to be completed by April and might see a summer release.
It will be interesting to see what the director of pathbreaking films like Lagaan, Swades and Jodhaa Akbar comes up with while attempting a totally different genre with comparison to his last three films. The film is based on a young man in pursuit of trying to find a girl to marry else his family will have to face certain problems. The bright and colorful poster of the film good very positive vibes about the film. Hopefully the film will justify it.

Abhishek and Aishwarya to star in Excel Entertainment's next to be directed by Abhinay Deo

Abhishek and Aishwarya are to act together in yet another film after Mani Ratnam's Ravana. The film is to be directed by Abhinay Deo who is currently busy with Aamir Khan productions Delhi Belly. The news has been confirmed by Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment. He says that the film is a thriller and Abhi and Aish are not paired opposite each other. He adds that the film will go on floors in June and wrap by October and they will be shooting in Greece, Thailand, Istanbul and London.

Farah Khan to choreograph a song in Hrithik-starrer Kites

Though Farah Khan had said that she won't be choreographing any songs except for Shahrukh and Karan Johar but now she will be choreographing for a song in Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites. The song composed by Rajesh Roshan will be filmed on Hrithik and Barbara.

Farah says that its an unconventional English non-lip-sync number. They will be working on the song on their birthdays(Farah Khan-9th Jan, Hrithik Roshan-10th Jan). Other songs in the film have been choreograped by US-based choreographer Flexy Stu who has earlier worked with Hrithik in his Hide n Seek and Radico Magic Moments advertisements.

Ghajini : Masala Cinema with Aamir's tadka gives the blockbuster recipe

Going to see a film like Ghajini one has to go with the right expectations. You cant go to watch Ghajini having a TZP, RDB or a Lagaan in mind. As said by Aamir it is actually an escapist film. Its long since we saw a full blown action film. We have had action films in the recent past but there action was more about chase sequences. Ghajini revives the good old action and Maar Dhaad. But it is way more believable than the 80's films becuase of the technological advancements, better experts and mostly because of Aamir Khan makes it look believable.

Ghajini apart from being an action film is also a love story at its soul. The action we see is for the revenge of the protagonist's beloved's murder. The protagonist is a rich businessman Sanjay Singhania(Aamir Khan) and his beloved is Kalpana(Asin). There love story has certain charm to it and their chemistry is awesome becuase of the way their characters are. Kalpana is very charming, outspoken and has a child like energy whereas Sanjay is mature and responsible kind of a guy. They balance their personalities very well. Their love story is shown mainly as a flashback in the film. There is also a lot of humour in that part in contrast to the darkness in the present part. All the comic scenes are really good due to the situations offered by the screenplay and Asin. The way she explains her faked first meeting with Sanjay Singhania to everyone induces uncontrollable laughter everytime. Also when she is required to bring Sanjay Singhania to office party, those scenes are amazing. The best part in the love story is that Sanjay does not want Kalpana to know who he really is and want her to love him like a common man. Though later it becomes a tragedy as Kalpana gets murdered without Sanjay being able to tell him that who he was.

The death of Kalpana and their unrealized love turns Sanjay from a suave business man to a merciless killer machine. He cannot remember anything for more than 15 minutes but with the help of notes and the photographs how he manages to reach Ghajini forms the crux of Ghajini. Sanjay now has only one aim that is to find Ghajini and kill him to revenge the death of Kalpana.

A.R. Muragadoss, the director of both the original and the remake has done a very good job. He knows what he is doing and has a very good hold on the narrative. He handles both the action sequnces as well as the romantic scenes with amazing ease.

The cinematography by Ravi K. Chandran is a high point of the film. He shoots the flashback scenes and the present sequences very differently to bring out the mood of the situation. Editing by Anthony is also really good. The film despite being 3 hours long doesn't bore at any point. The narrative is always moving. Also the flashback sequences have been merged very well with the present.

Song picturisation is also really good. I really liked 6 Aamir Khans in the Behka song. The best was when all 6 are dancing together. Picturisation of Guzarish is also amazing. Aamir and Asin both look really dashing in the song and we get to see many unseen locations with great visuals. Aye bachchu is Asin's intro song and its picturisation is also really good. Only lattu seems a bit out of place and is thankfully not shown fully. Kaise Mujhe is played in the background and has the best impact of them all even long after you have left cinema hall. The song has some really great cinematography and Aamir's expressions in the song proves his class as an actor.

Music by Rahman is quite brilliant. Guzarish, Behka and Ae bachchu are all amazing songs in their own capacities but the best is surely kaise mujhe which gives soul to the film. Now as for the action its the best action of this kind I have ever seen on Hindi Cinema. During the final action sequences I was awestruck. Though it was pretty long I was hoping it not to end. Action is definitely not realistic but Aamir Khan makes it look very believable. kudos to the stunt directors Peter Hienes and Stun Shiva.

Ghajini as a film rests on the brilliant performance by Aamir Khan. He shines in both the roles. As a businessman he gives a brillaintly controlled and subtle performance. He does not speak much and lets Asin do all the talking. But his expressions are priceless. His role in other part is very challenging for any actor as it is a larger than life fantasical kind of character. Its not an easy task to portray the role of a person who loses his memory every 15 minutes and is yet motivated enough to revenge for his beloved's death. Its not only a physical transformation that he had to undergo but a pyschological one as well. As Aamir is a thinking actor, he had to understand what goes inside the mind of such a character. He beats up the goons mercilessly but after his memory goes away wonders what all has happen. He does it brilliantly through his expressions and body language. His eyes conveys his hunger for revenge amazingly. Definitely its Aamir's most difficult role.

Asin is really really charming. She is a powerhouse. To be in the same frame as Aamir and yet be noticed is no mean feat. She does her role really well so the audience actually roots for Aamir for her murder's revenge in the film. Pradeep Rawat is good as the villain and Ziah Khan is also convincing in her role. The characters actors in the flashback portions are all good but in present day portions the character actors could have been much better.

All in all Ghajini is a really amazing full blown entertainer if you go with the right mindset for the film of this kind. There is something for everybody in the film. There is brilliant action, there is amazing love story, beautifully picturised songs, very good situational comedy and most importantly Aamir Khan.

Ghajini Box Office Collections 1st week and 2nd weekend

Ghajini has grossed 64.41 crore nett in India in its extended 8 day first week thus beating the previous records by huge margins. The film has given distributor shares of around 38 crores in its first week and is already 8th on the all time list. By the end of second week it is expected to be at 3rd place only behind Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! and Gadar.

In its second weekend it has earned close to 17 crore nett in India which is really huge.

Ghajini is also supposed to be the biggest hit of Aamir in overseas market. By the last Sunday evening it grossed around $ 6.5 million overseas. In week one it grossed $1.9 million in North America, $0.7 million in UK and $1.5 million in Middle East.
